Mechanical Turk: What It Is
Simply put, Mechanical Turk is a task and labor marketplace. Amazon saw two problems and decided it could fix both of them.
The first problem? Tons of companies have small tasks that can’t be fully automated, but that don’t amount to a full-time job. They can’t (or—let’s be real—perhaps just don’t want to) hire someone to do them 40 hours a week. Or in some cases, researchers need access to data in the form of people’s opinions, and they don’t have a good way to reach enough people.
The second problem? Plenty of people want to make extra money but can’t fit into the confines of a traditional job, for a whole host of reasons.
Amazon saw an opportunity to connect these two groups. That’s what Mechanical Turk is for.
Mechanical Turk: How It Works
Once you sign up for a Mechanical Turk account, you’ll see tasks of all sorts. Some tasks require experience or require you to pass a test. Save those for later, and get started on the easier ones that anyone can take. Most are small, bite-sized tasks that don't take long to complete.
In the beginning, you may need to take some lower-paying tasks just to get established. But in the long run you can earn a decent bit of cash here.
